Is David Beckham’s Inter Miami All Set for MLS Glory?

Soccer is a game that is loved all over the world, but few of the sport’s stars have managed to reach the level of fame enjoyed by David Beckham.

The former midfielder played for some huge clubs during his incredible career, including the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid. He knows a thing or two about US sports as well, thanks to his time playing in the MLS with LA Galaxy.

However, in more recent years, he has been attracting attention for his activities off the pitch. His biggest project has arguably been the launch of Inter Miami CF, a club that now has its sights set on sporting success.

Big plans

The official Inter Miami site details how Beckham is the organization’s owner and president of soccer operations. The team was launched as the MLS’s 25th club back in January 2018, with managing owner Jorge Mas describing it as “a proud day” for Miami.

The club currently plays at the DRV PNK Stadium, but there are plans for a major new venue to be constructed for the side. The Miami Freedom Park project was unveiled towards the end of 2018 and is based around the creation of a world-class stadium, as well as public parks and other facilities.

Beckham’s involvement in the team arguably highlights the growing profile that has developed around soccer in the US in the past couple of decades. Special matches like the one between a team of MLS All-Stars and English Premier League side Chelsea have put the sport in the spotlight, while a handful of US players have also made waves in the game. Coincidentally, a good example currently plays for Chelsea, as Pennsylvania-born Christian Pulisic has put in some eye-catching performances for the team. In addition, the MLS has become a prominent part of the sports betting world. For instance, Betway dedicates a section of its betting platform to the league, with fans having a range of options for making wagers. All the latest matches are covered, while a number of markets are on offer for each of them. These include Win/Draw/Win, 1st Goal and Both Teams to Score.

Major names

Of course, another big factor that highlights the growing reputation surrounding the MLS is the quality of players in the league. This is something that Inter Miami certainly knows all about, as the club features some major names on its roster.

Gonzalo Higuain has enjoyed a glittering career at many of Europe’s biggest clubs and he is leading the line for the side at the moment. In addition, Blaise Matuidi was a World Cup winner with France in 2018 and he is another key part of the Miami squad. There is also a sprinkling of English Premier League experience too, thanks to the likes of defender Ryan Shawcross. The latter recently made his debut for the club, with his performance leading to his inclusion in the MLS Team of the Week.

Inter Miami also has a high-profile coach, with Beckham’s former Manchester United team-mate Phil Neville leading the side. He recently told Talksport in the UK how the interview process was anything but easy, as he particularly had to demonstrate to the Mas family that he was the right man for the job. He added that he was loving the experience, but also described the league as “the most competitive” in the world. This has perhaps been highlighted in Miami’s results so far this season. At the time of writing, on May 4, the club has won once, drawn once and lost once in the Eastern Conference.

Fascinating fixtures ahead

The MLS might have some way to go before it reaches the level of profile enjoyed by other US sports like the NFL, but there have been plenty of intriguing developments around the soccer competition in recent years.

David Beckham’s return with Inter Miami has been a real talking point and the club clearly has some strong assets as it targets success this season. So, could the side genuinely go all the way and win the whole thing? It will be fascinating to see how things develop and whether Phil Neville ultimately proves to be the man to coach the side to soccer glory.
