Carolina Panthers Offseason Update

By SBRForum.com

Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers are looking to make more strides this coming season. With maturity likely on the offensive side and some improvements made to the defense, will the Panthers be a profitable team to roll with when it comes to free football picks?

No player was as electrifying and fun to watch as Newton was in his first season in the league.

He may not have been able to lead the Panthers to very many winners, but he did finish with 4,051 passing yards, a rookie record, while also accounting for 14 rushing touchdowns.

Steve Smith is still around and quickly formed an excellent understanding with Newton. He neared 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns in the 2011 season, but it'd be great for Carolina to get someone to take pressure off of Smith. As it stands right now, Brandon Lafell or David Gettis will be manning the second WR spot.

That said, Carolina did go out and get running back Mike Tolbert to add even more quality to an already stacked backfield.

The Panthers will also be ecstatic to have stud linebacker Jon Beason back and healthy. He hurt his Achilles in Week 1 last season and missed the rest of the year, but has apparently made a full recovery. Carolina will love having Beason back in the middle of the defense.

So while the Panthers only won six games last season, there's a ton of talent within this franchise. Improvements should happen, even if the team does have to deal with one of the toughest divisions in football.

Much of the spotlight will be on Newton and whether or not he can avoid a sophomore slump. If he handles the pressure well and grows even more, we could definitely see the Panthers right up there competing week in and week out.
