Will Dwight Howard Be Traded?

There is talk of Dwight Howard going to several different teams or staying put in Orlando. I'm going to list off some probable teams where Dwight could land, and the best fit team for multiple championship opportunities.

I'm going to start off with the Orlando Magic, Dwight Howard could stay in Orlando and continue to be the man with a good but inconsistent supporting cast. I think management went in the wrong direction building around Dwight Howard. They put jump shooters with poor defense around the best center in the league today. Dwight is known for being a dominate rebounder and defender, but having only one defender on your team? This means they are set up to try and out score the opposing team. You live by the jump shot, you die by the jump shot. The shooters on this team can be on fire one game to not making a shot the next, since there is only one good defender, they don't slow other teams down so the shooters must be able to score at a high rate every night. If you want to keep Dwight Howard on your team you must get some defenders and people who can create their own offense. People argue Ryan Anderson because he is having a good year.. But only offensively! In the playoffs he will have to match up with some of the better players at his position in which we all know he can't defend them. Amare stoudemire, Kevin Garnett, Carlos boozer, and Chris bosh will all be in the playoffs who you don't want Ryan Anderson to match up with. Dwight may not want to be like LeBron James and leave, so chances are he may stay.. But if they don't bring in some more all-around players he may be forced to take his talents somewhere else.

Los Angeles Lakers are another team Dwight could be playing for. This combination of Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard would be a devastating offensive attack, but I see them having problems. Kobe is a scorer and looks for his shots, Dwight would have less touches on the ball which could cause frustration. The Lakers are aging and wouldn't have a big window of time to win championships. The number one goal is to get rings and the lakers are a questionable team for him to go to for rings. So I think Howard will not end up in a lakers uniform. It's short and more simple to me. Aging and chemistry issues are too much, Kobe has two solid big men on his team now who don't receive the ball from Kobe enough. If everyone knows that, I'm sure Dwight knows that. Very low chance if any of Dwight Howard playing for the Lakers.

Dwight Howard and Gilbert Arenas
Orlando's Dwight Howard and Gilbert Arenas (1) in Atlanta Hawks 84-81 victory over the Orlando Magic in Eastern Conference First Round Game 6 at Philips Arena in Atlanta, GA.

Then we have the talk of Howard heading to the New Jersey Nets. Deron williams pairing up with Dwight Howard would be a powerful point guard and center combination. The two are friends and D Will is a top 3 PG, behind Rose and CP3 in my opinion. You throw in the addition of the best center in the league they could be a playoff team off the start. The negative side to this, the supporting cast of the Nets is not the strongest, the team record is 9-23. When you have a high quality PG and that bad of a record, there is a problem. I think it would be a couple years to build around those two properly to win a championship or multiple championships. The chances of Dwight landing in New Jersey seem pretty good.

Let's not forget the Chicago Bulls, Dwight said earlier in the trade talks he did not prefer to play in Chicago then one day came out to the media and put the Bulls as one of his preferred teams. Could you imagine the duo of Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard? You have the best point guard in the league in Rose who is playing at the highest efficiency of his career (+21.74) Derrick gets double teamed every game, with Howard no one would dare to double him leaving Dwight Howard 1 on 1 in the paint. The Bulls would still have Carlos boozer, due to the fact he has too big of a contract for magic to have. Boozer would be able to play where he plays best, in the high post shooting jumpers while Howard commands the paint like he does for the magic. The bulls are a championship contending team and are ready for a title run now. they have coach Tom Thibodeau who has proven to be a good coach. Tom has shaped the Bulls into a top defensive team and Howard could possibly improve his defense even more being paired with a defensive minded coach. The Bulls would be the best fit for Howard, but I think the chances are lower of Howard going to the Bulls than the Nets.

Dwight's dominance:

  • 3x NBA defensive player of the year
  • 20.3 PPG this season
  • 2.2 BPG this season
  • 15.3 RPG this season
