This Week in College Basketball: Week 3

By Dennis Berry

We are now three weeks into the college basketball season. Hopefully you enjoyed holiday weekend.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that brings football to mind. The NFL is in full force and college football is coming to an end. There was plenty of college basketball to watch as well. Thanksgiving weekend gives us a week full of early season tournaments to watch. There was other news as well.

NBA Lockout over

There was finally some good news on the NBA front as the lockout appears to be over. Finally. Of course one issue that college fans are most curious about is the age limit. It does not appear that it is set in stone. Yahoo Sports Adrian Wojnarowski says the league could make a committee to look at the rule and determine where to go. So it looks like there could be no changes made before the 2012 NBA Draft.

Syracuse Investigation

The investigation into accusations by former Syracuse assistant coach Bernie Fine is looking worse. First came news that a third accuser had come out against Fine. The story took an even odder turn when ESPN Outside the Lines released a recorded conversation between Fine's wife (Laurie Fine) and one of the accusers (Bobby Davis). The conversation was in 2002 and wife admitted that she had concerns about her husband. What really makes you shake your head is when Laurie admits that she too had a relationship with Davis.

Then Sunday Syracuse fired Fine. The latest development in the case was just too much for the school to sit by and do nothing.

Injury Bug

Injuries are going to happen. When you play at least 30 games a year, every team will get hit with some. The season enders are the worst ones. That hit Notre Dame this past week. Senior Tim Abromaitis, who as averaging 14 points a game, tore his ACL during practice. After a 4-0 start, the Irish lost to Missouri and Georgia in the CBE Classic. The loss od Abromaitis will not help Notre Dame when it comes time for Big East play to start.

Upsets

If the first three weeks are any indication, March could be crazy. We had two teams ranked in the top five lose over the past week.

  • UNLV over #1 North Carolina
  • Central Florida over #4 Connecticut
  • #15 Michigan over #8 Memphis
  • University of Denver over St. Mary's.

Dunk of the Week
