Senator Runciman Pushes For Sports Betting Bills

By SportsbookReview.com

Senator Bob Runciman seems to have more logic than the average old-school government employee. While most still think that sports betting is something that should still be illegal, he sees the new way of things and is pushing to legalize single-event-betting in the near future.

As it stands now, Canada is more advanced than some countries (read: United States) as it allowed sports betting as long as it is in a parlay of at least three games. Many people opposing Runciman believe that legalizing single-game betting would somehow affect the credibility of pro and amateur sports leagues – even though sports betting is still allowed in Canada. On top of that, many people legally bet offshore with sportsbooks that allow single-event betting.

However, for some reason the old school guard feels that single-game betting affects the credibility of the league.

Runciman recently pointed out that the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL employed a head coach that worked as convicted book and that Major League Baseball had a big steroid scandal, and that the NFL employed replacement officials who had been fired from the Lingerie Football League for incompetence. All of those things seem to bite at the credibility of their respective sports more so than just some sports betting.

Canadians still spend huge sums of money on single-event betting online regardless of whether it is legal or not. Just as is the case in any country, people will find a way to do it whether it is legal or not. However, if the Canadian government legalized it, they would be able to monitor it and regulate it.

Even so, gambling is still frowned upon and it will still take plenty of time to pass. We’ll see what happens in the coming months but it doesn’t appear that sports betting is on the cusp of being legalized. Eventually it will but for now, it’s still a battle in courts and debate rooms.
