Which quarterbacks will move in 2022?

As the most important position on the football field, and the player whose abilities can make the difference between playoff success and regular season failure, the role of quarterback is the first that any NFL franchise has to get right. The vital importance of getting the right man for the position can lead to franchises shifting their entire strategy just to sign or draft the player they want.

Every piece of speculation about a potential quarterback move sparks nationwide debate among sports fans, and bettors also respond as sportsbooks come up with new NFL team odds for 2022.

Already, this offseason has thrown up some surprises. Aaron Rodgers has re-signed with the Packers, Ben Roethlisberger has retired, Tom Brady retired then un-retired, and Russell Wilson has finally moved from Seattle, switching to Denver.

As teams scramble to maximize their available salary and position themselves to extract value from the draft, the quarterback position will once again be headline news. Here are some of the main quarterback issues that are yet to be resolved as we build towards the NFL Draft in April.

Deshaun Watson

Here, teams aren't only trading for football players. Watson is accused of sexual misconduct in 22 incidences, which are presently the subject of civil lawsuits, a police investigation and an NFL inquiry. He has not yet been charged criminally. These are legal issues that must be treated with due seriousness.

Given the lack of clarity in that area, which prevented him from being transferred last season, any trade involving Watson would be fraught with difficulty and risk.

Without question, he has the potential and ability to lead a team to a championship and he is still relatively young at 26, so there is lots of potential there, but will any franchise want to take the risk and the potential reputational damage associated with the player?

Jimmy Garoppolo

Garoppolo will most likely be traded before the 2022 season, as the 49ers have stated their intention to move him and make 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance their starter. Jimmy G has an established track record as a starter, with a 35-16 lifetime record (including playoffs). While playing under Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco and Josh McDaniels in New England, he had a career passer rating of 98.9.

He is also coming off a good season in which he helped lead the 49ers to the NFC championship game. Although he won't throw for many weeks due to shoulder surgery, if his recuperation goes well and he returns in late June, he might be a potential starter for a club seeking a bridge quarterback or someone to compete with a quarterback who is currently under contract.

Jameis Winston

Back in February, we saw Winston run for the first time since tearing his ACL in Week 8. Prior to his injury, the former No. 1 overall pick had performed well under Sean Payton, demonstrating that his one-year apprenticeship under Drew Brees had not been wasted.

Winston was 5-2 with a 59.0 percent completion rate, 167.1 passing yards per game, 7.3 passing yards per attempt, 14 passing touchdowns, three interceptions and a career-high 102.8 passer rating in seven games in 2021. He looked a very different quarterback in 2019 than he was in Tampa, and there is a good chance that he will be retained by the Saints to lead Pete Carmichael's attack, though he could be an attractive prospect for a number of franchises.

Mitchell Trubisky

Trubisky is a free agent this year and may be pursued by a number of organizations. Since 2018, he has a 25-13 record as a starter, with a .658 win rating that ranks sixth among quarterbacks, behind Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. This shows he has the necessary skills. The former Bear spent the 2021 season in Buffalo, where he appears to have focused on his philosophy and approach to the game, while serving as Josh Allen’s understudy.

Trubisky has said that his move to Buffalo had a significant influence on his attitude and approach, mostly due to the opportunity to see a new way of doing things, which he claims has allowed him to return to playing more instinctual football without overthinking or fear of making errors. It seems like he is ready to return to the front lines for an NFL club, and it wouldn't be surprising if a team gives him a go, especially if they are searching for competition in the position.
