2012 Sugar Bowl Preview

Michigan (10-2) vs. Virginia Tech (10-2)

The Wolverines are back! For the first time since 2006, Michigan finds itself in a BCS bowl. While that year's team was ranked third and missed the title game by a nose, this group represents the resurgence of college football's winningest program! The Wolverines find themselves matched against Virginia Tech, which is the most consistent performer in the SEC and a formidable opponent.

This matchup is all about offense vs. defense. Michigan's offense, led by dynamic quarterback Denard Robinson, is explosive. Robinson is equally capable of rushing and passing and has gotten much better this season at taking care of the ball when under pressure. This group is capable of hanging 40 plus points on a mediocre defense but will be up against one of the nation's best in Virginia Tech. The Hokies' defense is not in-your-face flashy like LSU or Alabama but it is a group that tends to get the job done and get off the field quickly.

The deciding wild card in this matchup will be Michigan's defense. Woeful under former coach Rich Rodriguez, the Wolverines were the most underrated defensive group in the nation this year. The Hokies offense was decent this year but neither elite nor explosive. So, if Michigan's defense shows up to play, it will be the deciding factor in this year's Sugar Bowl.
